In my world, there is only one task you must complete to achieve adulthood.

Choose your own death.

This is extreme, I know. That is the point. Leaping into adulthood can feel extreme for some. It might feel like they are actually starting to move through life. When we are adults we choose a career for the rest of our lives, we can choose if the person we date is "our person", we can choose if we want kids, we can choose what house we want to live in, and we can choose what towels we want in our bathroom. There are so many things we have to choose as adults. So, why not this. It is the one thing in all of our lives that we have in common, the great democracy, death. Probably, the most important thing we do in our lives.

As teenagers, we think we are invincible. Nothing can stop us and the world is our oyster. So, I think finally being mature and becoming an adult should include a full admission of mortality. Realizing that you only have one life to live by choosing how it will end may be an appropriate way to full admit to yourself that you are only human.

So, after you choose your death, go out there, make mistakes, get crazy, but be ready. Remember, you know the ending to your story.
